La Regina Giovanna
Lungo la costiera sorrentina, c’è un luogo dove la storia, il mito e la natura si fondono dando vita ad un mix perfetto di bellezza e suggestione. Si tratta dei Bagni della Regina Giovanna, una tappa obbligata per chi viene a Sorrento. Uno dei siti archeologici più importanti della penisola Sorrentina; intriso di storia, natura e leggenda.
Il nome, infatti, è legato alla Regina Giovanna D’Angiò, sovrana di Napoli. Di lei si narra che tra il 1371 e il 1435, venisse in villeggiatura al mare accompagnata dai suoi giovani amanti con cui era solita intrattenersi durante il bagno in queste acque.
Da qui l’origine del nome I Sogni della Regina. L’immagine di una donna influente, emancipata ed intelligente.

The name, in fact, is linked to Queen Giovanna D’Angiò, sovereign of Naples. It is said about her that between 1371 and 1435, she came on holiday to the sea accompanied by her young lovers with whom she used to spend time bathing in these waters.
Hence the origin of the name I Sogni della Regina. The image of an influential, emancipated and intelligent woman.

Regina Giovanna II, Giovanna D’Angio Durazzo (1371-1435), figlia del Re Carlo III, succedette al Trono al fratello Ladislao I. Donna intelligente, forte e decisa, ereditò un regno segnato da rivolte, guerre e incursioni. Si sposò due volte, prima con Carlo D’Austria e poi con Giacomo Borbone II, ebbe infiniti amanti ma un unico, grande amore tormentato, Sergianni Caracciolo. Decisa a mantenere il suo potere, ma poco avvezza alle guerre, si circondò di uomini, i cosiddetti “Favoriti” per mantenere il trono e le relazioni.
Numerose sono le leggende che ruotano intorno alla Regina.
Queen Giovanna II, Giovanna D’Angio Durazzo (1371-1435), daughter of King Charles III, succeeded the throne to her brother Ladislao I. An intelligent, strong and determined woman, she inherited a kingdom marked by revolts, wars and raids. She married twice, first with Charles of Austria and then with Giacomo Borbone II, she had infinite lovers but one, great tormented love, Sergianni Caracciolo. Determined to keep her power, but not very accustomed to wars, she surrounded herself with men, the so-called “Favorites” to maintain the throne and relations. There are numerous legends that revolve around the Queen.

Si narra che a Napoli, nei sotterranei del Castello Maschio Angioino, vivesse un grosso e famelico coccodrillo a cui Giovanna dava in pasto i suoi amanti una volta stancatasi di loro. Ancora oggi, passeggiando nei sotterranei del Castello, é possibile udire voci e lamenti dei malcapitati.

It is said that in Naples, in the basement of the Maschio Angioino Castle, there lived a big and ravenous crocodile to which Giovanna fed her lovers once tired of them. Even today, walking in the basement of the Castle, it is it is possible to hear voices and complaints of the unfortunate.

Della Villa, restano ad oggi, solo rovine sul mare ed una spiaggia appartata. Quella che un tempo era stata teatro di atroci delitti, si presenta oggi, come il piu bell’angolo di paradiso, della Penisola Sorrentina.

Giovanna’s tales and legends are also linked to her summer residence, Villa Capo di Sorrento, known as the Baths of the Queen.
Of the Villa, only ruins on the sea and a secluded beach remain to this day. What once had been the scene of atrocious crimes, today presents itself as the most beautiful corner of paradise on the Sorrentine Peninsula.

Tra le lenzuola di una camera accogliente, illuminata dal calore delle candele, dormiva Sergianni Caracciolo, potente nobile, a cui Giovanna aveva donato il suo amore. Erano fuggiti insieme da Napoli ad Arquata del Tronto, trovando in quella stanza, riparo dalla furia cieca di Alfonso V d’Aragona, nominato da Giovanna erede al trono, ma subito dopo destituito. Alfonso V, voleva essere Re, ma la risoluta Regina non era intenzionata a cedere la corona ed il potere. Alfonso V D’Aragona, cosi, poche ore prima, aveva attaccato Castel Capuano al comando di un esercito senza scrupoli. Sergianni Caracciolo era stato catturato, le sue guarnigioni però erano riuscite a respingere l’assedio, permettendo a Giovanna di scappare e mettersi in salvo. La regina, a sua volta, grazie ad un astuto scambio di prigionieri, era riuscita a liberare il suo Amante. Il destino fù crudele. Sergianni morì poco dopo, ucciso a pugnalate nella notte del 19 agosto 1432 nelle sue stanze a Castel Capuano. L’omicidio resta ancora oggi un mistero, sebbene ci sia chi annoveri, ancora una volta, la “crudele e vendicativa” Regina, tra i mandanti dei sicari.

Between the sheets of a cozy bedroom, lit by the warmth of candles, Sergianni Caracciolo, a powerful nobleman, to whom Giovanna had given her love, slept. They fled together from Naples to Arquata del Tronto, finding in that room, shelter from the blind fury of Alfonso V of Aragon, appointed by Giovanna heir to the throne, but immediately afterwards dismissed. Alfonso V, wanted to be King, but the resolute Queen was not willing to give up the crown and power. Alfonso V of Aragon, thus, a few hours before, he had attacked Castel Capuano under the command of an unscrupulous army. Sergianni Caracciolo had been captured, its garrisons, however, had managed to repel the siege, allowing Giovanna to escape and save herself. The queen, in turn, thanks to a shrewd exchange of prisoners, had managed to free her Lover. Fate was cruel. Sergianni died shortly after, stabbed to death on the night of 19 August 1432 in his rooms at Castel Capuano. The murder still remains a mystery today, although there are those who count, Once again, the “cruel and vengeful” Queen, among the instigators of the assassins.

Virgilio 70 a.c, Mago e Poeta, figura mistica ed esoterica, costruì il Castel dell’Ovo su di un uovo, a cui aveva trasmesso un potere magico, protettore della città. Codesto fu appeso alle mura di una piccola camera segreta e protetto da una gabbia in metallo. Le monarchie regnanti che si susseguirono, avevano il difficile compito di custodirlo con cura, per poter beneficiare della sua protezione. Nel difficile regno di Giovanna, segnato da continue lotte al potere, l’uovo si ruppe e fù cosiderato, la causa stessa di tutti i mali dell’epoca. La regina, asserendosi gli stessi poteri del Mago Virgilio, sostituì l’uovo e promise al suo popolo, pace e prosperità.

Virgil 70 BC, Magician and Poet, mystical and esoteric figure, built the Castel dell’Ovo on an egg, to which he had transmitted a magical power, protector of the city. This was hung on the walls of a small secret chamber and protected by a metal cage. The reigning monarchies that followed one another had the difficult task of guarding it with care, in order to benefit from its protection. In the difficult reign of Giovanna, marked by continuous struggles for power, the egg broke and was considered the very cause of all the evils of the time. The queen, asserting herself the same powers as the Magician Virgil, replaced the egg and promised her people peace and prosperity.

Bagni della Regina Giovanna
A pochi passi dal centro di Sorrento, sul promontorio di Punta Capo a Sorrento, locati sulla costa dell’Area Marina Protetta di Punta Campanella una piccola oasi con una magnifica piscina naturale.
I Bagni sono anche un sito archeologico caratterizzato da storia e natura, i resti della villa di Pollio Felice sono circondati da un mare pazzesco e da acqua cristallina.

Dove oggi posa la statua di Sant’Antonino, infatti, si ergeva il Castello di Ferdinando d’Aragona, demolito nel 1843. Numerose sono state le trasformazioni urbanistiche che interessarono l’area durante il XIX secolo e che hanno conferito alla bella piazza, l’assetto attuale. Circondata da importanti edifici storici e di culto quali il Santuario della Madonna del Carmine e il museo di Palazzo Correale, vede ergersi al centro la statua di Torquato Tasso.

San Francesco
A pochi metri dalla Villa Comunale, sorge il complesso conventuale di San Francesco d’Assisi formato dalla chiesa, dal chiostro e dal monastero.
Nel XIV secolo i frati francescani fecero erigere, sul sito dell’antico oratorio fondato da Sant’Antonino, una chiesa in seguito modificata in stile barocco.
Oltre che per la bellezza, il chiostro è famoso per ospitare mostre d’arte, esposizioni nonché gli eventi musicali dell’Estate sorrentina.
A few meters from the Villa Comunale, stands the convent complex of San Francesco d’Assisi consisting of the church, the cloister and the monastery.
In the 14th century, the Franciscan friars built a church on the site of the ancient oratory founded by Sant’Antonino, later modified in Baroque style.

Il Museo ha sede in quella che fu la residenza settecentesca dei Correale (Villa alla Rota), conti di Terranova, donata dai fratelli Alfredo e Pompeo Correale alla città di Sorrento unitamente alle collezioni familiari di arte pittorica e decorativa per farne un museo aperto al pubblico.
Da non perdere, il bel giardino che circonda il palazzo e la terrazza- belvedere a picco sul golfo di Napoli.
